A personal note

Hi Molly & Derrick!

After I saw Zach's list of favorites, I chose to make an entire series inspired by Zach's love for creatures. And I decided to focus on the Hummingbird Hawk-Moth, the Leapard Frog, and the Pondhawk.

I know you never officially asked me to paint any of them. But I love how they turned out, and I'm really happy to share them with you — whether or not you decide to take the series home.

At the bottom of the page you'll find a very special offer I've set up just for you.

Anyway, I hope you've both been well! Thank you for the idea to paint these — I really am so pleased with them.

The creature collection

Original 01

Pondhawk

The Pondhawk is an aerial ambush predator that can capture insects nearly as large as itself, including other dragonflies. It waits on low perches, then launches suddenly at passing prey, gripping it with rows of strong leg spines. Females and young males are vivid green with dark markings, while mature males undergo a dramatic transformation to powdery blue. Males are also known for unusual aerial “cartwheel” contests, repeatedly circling over and under rivals while defending small territories around ponds. (Source : BugGuide.net)

Original 02

Hummingbird Hawk-Moth

The Hawk-Moth has a wonderful memory and can easily remember rewarding flower locations. Unlike most moths, it commonly flies in bright sunshine. Despite a wingspan of only 1.5 ish inches, it is a powerful migrant that can travel hundreds of miles! Its feeding tongue is about 20–23 mm long—roughly as long as its entire body.

Original 03

Leapard Frog

Leo the Leapard Frog frog can absorb both water and oxygen directly through his (or her?) skin. In the winter, he can spend the winter underwater beneath the ice, slowing his metabolism dramatically while continuing to breathe through his skin. He's an opportunistic hunters that can eat insects, spiders, worms, and sometimes even smaller frogs.
